One of the questions faced by job applicants—whether or not to include a photo on a CV—was evaluated by experts within the framework of international trends and discrimination risks. While the use of CVs with photos remains widespread in Turkey, different practices stand out in European countries.

Use of Photos in Europe

Fernández Reino stated that the use of photos on CVs varies much more across European countries than commonly thought. She noted that Anglo-Saxon countries such as the UK, US, Canada, and Ireland abandoned adding photos to CVs many years ago.

The Situation in Germany and Spain

While it was noted that the use of professional photos is traditionally widespread in Germany and Austria, it was stated that photo usage is also common in Spain and large parts of Central and Southern Europe, though it is not a rigid norm.

Practices in Turkey

Nigah Aksan, Deputy General Manager responsible for Recruitment and Workforce Solutions at Kariyer.net, stated that the use of photos is more widespread in Turkey and that this is an established habit rather than a fixed rule.

Risk of Discrimination and Bias

Stating that a photograph provides information about a candidate's race, ethnic origin, physical attractiveness, age, weight, and religious attire, experts emphasized that these elements can lead to biases in the initial stages of recruitment.

Blind Application Practices

While pointing out the importance of a photo-free CV in terms of equal opportunity, it was stated that names, addresses, and educational institutions can also provide signals, and the truly effective method is standardized and fully anonymized applications.

Candidate Experience Takes Precedence

Kariyer.net executive Aksan stated that what makes a CV strong is not the photo, but the candidate's clear communication of their experience, competencies, and the contribution they can bring to the position.
