Course of PMI Data in August

The August 2026 results of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry Turkey Manufacturing PMI survey were announced, and the headline index rose from 47.7 to 48.1. Although the index remained below the 50.0 threshold, it reached its highest level in the last three months.

Demand Conditions and New Orders

Uncertainties created by the war in the Middle East caused demand to remain weak in August as well, suppressing the performance of the manufacturing sector. Total new orders and new export orders recorded a slowdown.

Production and Employment Status

Due to the weakness in new orders, manufacturers reduced their production levels for the third consecutive month. The decline in workloads led companies to cut back on employment and purchasing activities.

Costs and Price Developments

Input cost inflation rose to its highest level in the last three months due to rising fuel, oil, and raw material prices. This situation caused companies to increase their selling prices as well.

Expert Evaluations and Outlook

S&P Global Market Intelligence Economics Director Andrew Harker stated that the war creates uncertainty over demand, but the loss of momentum in the decline of new orders offers hope for the future.
