Istanbul Airport Reaches Six Runways with the Fourth Main Runway
With a ceremony held at Istanbul Airport, the new main runway with an investment of 890 million euros was put into service, increasing the total number of runways at the facility to six.
During the ceremony held at Istanbul Airport with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the 4th main runway and additional facilities, realized with multi-billion euro investments, were officially opened.
Opening Ceremony and Investments
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made important statements at the Opening Ceremony of the 4th Runway and Additional Investments held at Istanbul Airport.
Stating that an investment of 2.12 trillion liras has been made in Istanbul alone at current prices, Erdoğan expressed that 604.4 billion liras of this amount was allocated to the aviation field.
Features and Contributions of the New Runway
The 4th main runway, which holds the distinction of being the first east-west oriented concrete runway put into service at the ceremony, was built with an investment cost of 890 million euros.
The new runway is projected to accelerate general aviation operations, shorten taxi and airborne holding times, and provide savings in fuel, time, and emissions.
Global Position of the Airport
With the new investments made, the total number of runways at Istanbul Airport increased to 6, while the number of international destinations reached 356 points in 133 countries.
Hosting 84.5 million passengers, Istanbul Airport ranks second in Europe and eighth in the world.
Economic Targets and Employment
It was announced that the economic contribution of Istanbul Airport corresponds to approximately 2.2 percent of the national income and 24.2 billion dollars.
It was noted that the airport is targeted to reach 472,000 jobs and 44 billion dollars in revenue by 2030.
