Italian Economy's 2026 Growth Expectation Approaches 1 Percent
It is reported that the Italian economy could grow more than expected in 2026, approaching the 1 percent level, while experts emphasize the need for caution due to structural issues.
It has been stated that Italy's GDP growth in 2026 could exceed the 0.6 percent projected in program documents and approach 1 percent. While statements by Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti and rising tax revenues draw attention ahead of the 2027 budget, experts warn against low productivity and demographic problems.
Growth Expectations and Minister's Statements
In statements made by Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti on the closing day of the Forum Teha Cernobbio, it was stated that Italy's GDP growth in 2026 could exceed the 0.6 percent forecasted in program documents.
Minister Giorgetti noted that an increase of 0.8 percent has been achieved for now and stated that if indicators remain positive, growth could approach 1 percent.
Evaluations by Economists and Experts
Speaking to Euronews, LUISS University professor Pietro Reichlin stated that this situation is a realistic forecast, but it is not yet sufficient to speak of a turning point for the Italian economy.
Reichlin stated that one should not rejoice excessively over the growth data, noting that looking at the international picture, Italy still remains at the bottom of the list alongside Germany and France, while Spain's growth rate is higher.
Structural Issues and Historically Low Productivity
Growth in the Italian economy continues to be hampered by structural issues ranging from low productivity to unfavorable demographic trends.
According to the researcher, the root cause of Italy's backwardness lies in the historically low productivity factor carried since the late 1990s.
Increase in Tax Revenues and Public Finances
The state recorded 346.1 billion euros in tax revenues in the first seven months of 2026; this figure is 9.4 billion euros more than the same period in 2025, corresponding to a 2.8 percent increase.
According to Mef's estimates, direct taxes reached 200.7 billion euros and indirect taxes reached 145.5 billion euros in the January-July 2026 period.
2027 Budget and Cautious Approach
It is stated that the additional revenues recorded in the first seven months of the year should not be viewed as automatically available resources for the 2027 budget.
The economist emphasized that the budget will be extremely cautious and that demographic dynamics are putting pressure on public finances.
