Number of paid employees increases across Turkey while manufacturing industry employment declines
While the number of paid employees across Turkey recorded an annual increase in July, the employment loss in the manufacturing industry reached its twenty-fourth month.
According to July paid employee statistics announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute, although general employment increased, losses in the manufacturing industry continued. According to sector-based data, growth was experienced in the construction, trade, and services sectors.
General Change in the Number of Paid Employees
The Turkish Statistical Institute published the July paid employee statistics. According to the announced data, the total number of paid employees across Turkey increased by 1.7 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 16 million 393 thousand.
Ongoing Employment Loss in the Manufacturing Industry
Despite the increase in general employment, the downward trend continued in the manufacturing industry sector. As the employment loss series in the sector entered its twenty-fourth month, the number of employees dropped to 4 million 494 thousand with a 1.7 percent annual decrease.
General State of the Industry Sector
The employment loss in the entire industry sector was calculated as 1.5 percent. In this context, the total number of employees in industrial branches fell to the 4 million 850 thousand level with a decrease of 71 thousand 737 people.
Increases in Construction and Services Sectors
Contrary to the decline in the manufacturing and general industry branches, an increase in employment was observed in the construction sector, as well as in trade and service branches. Employment in the construction sector rose by 3.5 percent to 2 million 71 thousand.
Contribution of Trade and Services to Employment
In the trade and services sector, which houses more than half of total employment, the number of employees increased by 280 thousand people in one year to 9 million 471 thousand. Growth in this area became the main factor supporting the general employment increase.
Changes and Trends in Sub-sectors
Trade sector employment recorded an increase of 2.5 percent, transportation and storage 5.3 percent, and accommodation and food services 2.9 percent. In the information and communication sector, the number of employees decreased by 1.1 percent.
