Oil Prices and Tech Stock Fluctuations Shake Markets on Wall Street
Rising oil prices, falling technology stocks, and sudden shifts in bond yields caused volatility on Wall Street. The price of Brent crude rose amid global uncertainties.
Financial markets in the United States followed an unstable path on Thursday due to rising oil prices, declining technology stocks, and sharp fluctuations in bond yields. While the S&P 500 index declined, stock indices finished the close mixed.
Status of Stock Indices
Sharp changes on Thursday kept financial markets volatile, and U.S. stock indices closed the day mixed. After reaching an all-time high, the S&P 500 index declined for the second consecutive time.
Course of Brent Crude and Political Statements
The barrel price of international benchmark Brent crude increased by 4.1 percent to $104.28. Uncertainties regarding when the war with Iran will return the energy industry to normal caused prices to fluctuate.
U.S. President Donald Trump's statement that productive talks were being held with Iran and that the U.S. military would not attack Iran before the elections in November led to sudden fluctuations in oil prices, which had approached $106 in the morning hours.
Sharp Fluctuations in the Bond Market
In the bond market, sharper fluctuations were seen alongside global rate hikes that carry the risk of slowing down the economy. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose in the morning hours but subsequently recorded a decline.
Following the U.S. government's announcement of a $22 billion 30-year Treasury bond sale, a noticeable drop occurred in long-term bond yields.
Declines in Technology Stocks
Although the easing in bond yields generally allowed most stocks to rise on Wall Street, declines in influential technology stocks overshadowed these gains. Companies such as Nvidia, Broadcom, and Micron Technology experienced sharp drops.
General Outlook in Global Stock Exchanges
In the South Korean stock market, a drop in Samsung Electronics shares negatively affected the Kospi index. Indices also lost value across many stock exchanges throughout Asia and Europe.
