Oil prices decline on expectations of increased Russian supply
The announcement that attacks on energy facilities will cease and expectations of increased diesel supply led to a drop in the oil market.
Oil prices fell on Monday following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that Russia and Ukraine agreed to halt attacks on energy facilities, alongside expectations that Russia will increase its diesel supply.
Details of the Decline in Oil Prices
Brent crude futures dropped 1.47% to $103.18 a barrel, while U.S. crude fell 1.68% to $90.31 a barrel. ICE gasoil futures, which track diesel prices, also declined by 3% to $1,436 a barrel.
Diesel Supply and Trump's Statements
Trump announced on Friday that Russia would immediately provide the U.S. and global markets with more than 300,000 metric tons—approximately 2.25 million barrels—of diesel. Expectations that Russia will boost its diesel supply eased supply concerns in the market.
Market Analysts' Assessments
Tim Waterer, Chief Market Analyst at KCM Trade, stated that these developments have reduced short-term supply pressure. However, Waterer noted that the decline in oil prices might remain limited due to uncertainties regarding the validity and duration of the ceasefire.
International Energy Agency and Stock Releases
International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol expressed that countries should evaluate the need to release additional diesel stocks to the market and accelerate previously committed stock releases.
Middle East Conflicts and Price Supports
Conflicts in the Middle East continue to support Brent crude remaining above $100 a barrel. The Houthis claimed responsibility for an attack on Saturday targeting the international airport in Riyadh, which left 13 people dead and over 300 injured.
Goldman Sachs Price Forecast Revision
Saudi officials reported that there were also injuries in a new attack targeting the airport on Sunday. Following these developments, Goldman Sachs raised its December Brent crude price forecast from $85 to $90 a barrel.
