With the beginning of winter preparations in Gaziantep and the Southeastern Anatolia Region, pickling Cucumis melo flexuosus has taken its place on the stalls. Known for its firm structure and aroma, the product receives intense interest from the local population and finds buyers at 30 TL per kilogram.

Planting and Harvest Process

Planted in mid-September as a second crop following the garlic harvest, the harvesting of Cucumis melo flexuosus continues until the end of October, depending on weather conditions.

Standing out with its firm structure and unique aroma, this product is widely used in making pickles, especially in the regional cuisine.

Farmers' Production Shift

Farmer Yusuf Karataş stated that he started harvesting Cucumis melo flexuosus in the first days of October, having planted it as a second crop after the garlic harvest.

Karataş noted that he gathers approximately 200 kilograms of produce daily from his field and offers the harvested Cucumis melo flexuosus for sale at 30 TL per kilogram.

Regional Demand Increase

Hasan Altun, President of the Araban Chamber of Agriculture and the Garlic Producers Association, emphasized that with the start of winter preparations, demand for pickling Cucumis melo flexuosus has increased significantly.

Altun noted that the product grown in the fertile soils of the Araban Plain ranks among the primary preferences of citizens preparing winter pickles thanks to its crispy texture.
