Fatih Yıldırım, a melon producer in Adana's Kozan district, started selling his products directly at the market by bypassing middlemen, thereby achieving a significant decrease in melon prices.

Direct sales from the field to the public

Fatih Yıldırım, who grows melons on approximately 40 decares of land in Aydın Neighborhood of Adana's Kozan district, expects a yield of about 70 tons this season.

Yıldırım, who has been farming since 2003, brings his products directly to consumers at the market together with his family instead of sending them to the wholesale market.

Excluding middlemen

Fatih Yıldırım stated that by eliminating middlemen and the wholesale market, they make direct sales from the field to the public, and that this method protects the farmer.

Stating that melon prices remain low in the field and this situation puts pressure on the farmer, the producer noted that they overcame this problem through direct sales.

Price advantage and costs

Stating that thanks to bringing the products directly to the market, the price per kilo ranges between 15 and 20 liras, Yıldırım said that when middlemen enter the picture, this price exceeds 25 liras.

He emphasized that thanks to this practice, both the producer earns more and citizens can buy melons at more affordable prices.

Production and harvest process

Explaining that melon cultivation requires a long and intensive labor process, the producer stated that about 70 days pass from the moment the seeds are planted in the field.

Stating that the harvest period lasts for a month and a half, Yıldırım expressed that they harvest melons one day and sell them at the market the next day.

Distinctive features of regional melons

He stated that the melons grown in the region are known as yellow-nose and have a unique aroma reminiscent of akide candy.

He added that thanks to open-field production, the products receive full sunlight, which directly reflects on their taste and fragrance.
