Radical Solution Proposals Against the Fund Crisis in Markets by Prof. Dr. Kamil Yılmaz
Evaluating the fund crisis that has been ongoing for three weeks, Prof. Dr. Kamil Yılmaz emphasized that transparency, forensic audits, and the establishment of a parliamentary research commission are necessary to restore confidence in the markets.
Prof. Dr. Kamil Yılmaz stated that preventive steps regarding the fund crisis, which started about three weeks ago, have fallen short, demanding the punishment of insiders who leaked information and the strengthening of transparency principles. Yılmaz analyzed the systemic risks of the crisis and the effects of the CBRT's interest rate policy and oil prices on the economy.
Call for Transparency in Crisis Management
Prof. Dr. Kamil Yılmaz stated that the steps taken since the beginning of the fund crisis have been slow and that statements regarding large funds are insufficient. Defending that state institutions must operate with full transparency, Yılmaz noted that an investigative commission to be established within the Parliament will play a critical role in eliminating the loss of public trust.
Systemic Risks and Portfolio Companies
Pointing out that the effects of the shock in the stock market continue, Yılmaz emphasized that the default of some portfolio companies carries the risk of spilling over into private sector bonds. He expressed that legal processes and transparency principles must be implemented simultaneously to stop the serious fund outflows from independent portfolio companies.
Interest Rate Policy Analysis for CBRT
Evaluating the cooling process in the economy, Yılmaz stated that the CBRT has room for a 100 basis point interest rate cut, but warned that an aggressive 200 basis point move could trigger a shift towards foreign currency. He stated that the slowdown in domestic demand spreading from industry to retail makes it imperative for the central bank to take more measured steps.
Geopolitical Impact on Oil Prices
Reminding that oil prices have regressed to the level of 102 dollars with the decrease in rhetoric regarding attacks on Iran, Yılmaz stated that it is difficult for prices to return to the 70 dollar level without the resolution of geopolitical risks. He warned that high oil prices could become a persistent economic problem that might last until the year 2027.
