Retro trend in the music industry: CD sales revenues and unit numbers increased
According to data from the Recording Industry Association of America, a significant increase in CD sales revenues and units was recorded in the first half of 2026.
According to a new report released by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), CD sales, which were expected to decline with the spread of digital music platforms, showed a significant revival in the first half of 2026.
58.6 Percent Increase in CD Revenues
According to RIAA data, CD sales revenues increased by 58.6 percent in the first half of 2026. Total revenue generated in this period reached 171.1 million dollars.
Official reports indicated that CD revenues stood at approximately 107.9 million dollars in the same period of the previous year.
Sales Units on the Rise
Alongside the increase in revenues, physical CD sales units also recorded a growth of 45.7 percent compared to the same period last year.
The number of units sold rose from 12 million to 17.5 million, demonstrating the continued interest in the traditional music format.
Contribution to General Sector Revenues
This strong recovery supported an increase of approximately 7 percent in the total revenues of the recorded music industry in the US in the first half of 2026.
Physical products, thought to have fallen behind the digital age, managed to contribute to the growth momentum across the industry.
Decline Process in Previous Years
This sudden surge in CD sales drew attention in the industry as it occurred right after a challenging 2025.
Data for the entirety of 2025 had revealed that CD revenues declined by 7.8 percent compared to the previous year, dropping to 312.4 million dollars.
