SpaceX has announced a massive $100 billion investment for the Starbase Louisiana project, which will be realized in the Vermilion Parish region on the Gulf Coast.
The complex, planned to be established on an area of approximately 125,000 acres, will be much larger than its existing base in Texas and will be able to support thousands of launches per year.
Construction Schedule and Initial Goals
According to SpaceX's plan, construction of the facility will begin in 2027, and the company aims to carry out its first Starship launch in 2029.
Louisiana Economic Development stated that initial operations of the facility are expected to begin in 2030.
Infrastructure and Equipment Features
The complex is planned to feature 5 launch complexes and a total of 10 launch pads.
Additionally, the project will include propellant production facilities, energy infrastructure, rocket processing areas, deep-water transportation facilities, and housing for employees.
Employment and Economic Contribution
While the project is planned to directly create 3,000 new jobs, the state administration predicts that the total number could exceed 11,000 with indirect effects.
The average annual salary for the positions created directly is expected to be approximately $92,600.
Environmental Debates and Sensitive Ecosystem
As much as the size of the project, the sensitive ecosystem of the region where it will be established has also become a subject of debate, as the facility will be built on Pecan Island, a significant wetland.
While SpaceX announced that it will support restoration efforts to reduce impacts on wildlife, environmental organizations are voicing their concerns.
