Attempt in Iran to criminalize any contact with foreign media
A new bill aimed at criminalizing communication with foreign media organizations has been brought to the agenda in Iran.
The Iranian administration has taken the first step toward a controversial bill that stipulates prison sentences for individuals who communicate with foreign media without prior notification to the intelligence ministry.
Details of the Bill
The new bill debated by Iranian lawmakers could make speaking with international mass media an offense for journalists, researchers, and ordinary citizens.
Risk of Imprisonment
According to human rights lawyer Moein Khazaeli, giving interviews, establishing contact, or sending photos to foreign media without prior notification to the intelligence ministry could result in prison sentences ranging from six months to two years.
Social Media Platforms
Social media platforms such as Instagram and X, which are considered to be funded by another country, will also be evaluated under the scope of this prepared bill.
Warnings from Rights Organizations
Human rights groups state that this move aims to completely cut off Iranian society from the rest of the world and carries the risk of turning the country into an isolated black hole.
