Strategic Outlook on the Global Economy Panel Held at Istanbul Economy Forum
Central bank governors gathered at the Istanbul Economy Forum to discuss changing global conditions, geopolitical risks, inflation, and future-oriented strategic investments.
Participating in the Strategic Outlook on the Global Economy panel held within the scope of the Istanbul Economy Forum, the governors of the central banks of Turkey, France, the Netherlands, and Saudi Arabia evaluated recent developments in the global economy, inflation expectations, and green transformation processes.
An Overview of the Global Economy from Central Banks
Governor Karahan of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey stated that policymakers are going through an exceptional period due to changing global conditions. Stating that numerous changes have been witnessed in recent years, Karahan pointed out that different economic perspectives came together during the session.
Geopolitical Developments and the Supply Chain
Touching upon the situation in the Middle East and global integration, Karahan emphasized that geopolitical developments directly shape energy and trade flows. He stated that the fundamental issue for central banks is to understand how much of these changes will be temporary or permanent.
Communication Strategies and Accurate Information
Pointing out the importance of connecting with other segments of the economy in addition to communicating with markets, Karahan noted that communicating with companies and households, as well as maintaining a presence with accurate expertise against the misinformation of finfluencers, is critical.
Emphasis on Supply Shocks and Green Transformation
Bank of France Governor Emmanuel Moulin stated that credibility is a fundamental element in keeping long-term inflation expectations stable. Moulin said they anticipate that investments required for green transformation will push up the real interest rate in the medium term.
Public Finance and Banking Union
De Nederlandsche Bank Governor Olaf Sleijpen stated that public finance balances need to be strengthened. He noted that reducing public debt is necessary to revive private investments and that completing the banking union in Europe is important.
Liquidity and Crisis Management Framework
Saudi Central Bank Governor Ayman Al-Sayari stated that developments on a global scale do not require a radical change in policy frameworks. Emphasizing the importance of being prepared in the current process, Al-Sayari highlighted liquidity and crisis management frameworks.
