Strategic Partnership Focused on Defense and Energy Between Turkey and Somalia
At an event held in Mogadishu, it was emphasized that relations between the two countries have transformed into a strategic partnership in the fields of defense, security, economy, and energy.
During an event organized by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, it was stated that relations between Turkey and Somalia have moved beyond humanitarian aid, evolving into a strategic structure in the fields of defense, security, economy, and energy.
Turning Point in Relations
The evolution of cooperation between the two countries was discussed at the program titled "New Era in Turkey-Somalia Relations: Trust, Cooperation, and Strategic Partnership" held in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu. President Tayyip Erdoğan's visit in 2011 was accepted as the beginning of the new era in relations.
Defense and Security Cooperation
While the TURKSOM Military Training Base established by Turkey in Somalia forms the center of defense cooperation, agreements signed aim to strengthen the security of maritime jurisdictions. Security and economy are projected to be the areas that will deepen the most in the upcoming period.
Energy and Drilling Activities
Following seismic research conducted off the coast of Somalia, deep-sea drilling activities constitute the new phase of the energy partnership. The activities carried out by the Oruç Reis and Çağrı Bey vessels were cited among the concrete symbols of this cooperation.
Combating Disinformation
It was pointed out that as cooperation in strategic areas grows, disinformation activities targeting the partnership have increased. Officials emphasized that disinformation has turned into a security issue affecting states' decision-making mechanisms and social trust.
