Turkey Increases Its Global Power in the Agriculture and Flour Sector

While tensions in the Black Sea region and drought in Europe highlight Turkey's agricultural potential, the country maintains its leadership in flour exports, which it has sustained uninterrupted for 11 years, and ensures supply security in the domestic market.

Global Crises and Strategic Position

Military tensions centered in the Black Sea, extreme drought in Europe, and Turkey's agricultural production potential have made the country's strategic position even more important. Having an annual production capacity of 32 million tons, the Turkish flour sector accounts for 23 percent of the global flour trade.

Eleven Years of Export Championship

With its strong production infrastructure and storage capacity, Turkey has held the title of the world's flour export champion uninterrupted for 11 years. The grain corridor role undertaken during the Russia-Ukraine war, which has been ongoing since February 2022, also reinforced this advantage.

Impact of Regional Risks on Supply

Eren Günhan Ulusoy, Eurasian President of the International Association of Operative Millers and Cerealists, pointed out that the logistics and port infrastructures of Russia and Ukraine are targets of mutual attacks, and that risks are escalating.

Situation in Russia and Ukraine

Disruptions in the export capacities of the two countries, which provide approximately 30 percent of the world's wheat supply, directly affect global markets. According to US Department of Agriculture estimates, Russia's export expectation was revised down to 43-46 million tons, and Ukraine's to 13.5 million tons.

Supply Security in the Domestic Market

Grain production carried out in Turkey this year was quite productive, and the wheat harvest is expected to be 24.5 million tons. The successful domestic harvest and strong stock structure isolate the country from the global supply crisis, indicating that there will be no supply problems in the short and medium term.
