Turkey's Decade-Long Transformation in Renewable Energy Production

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar shared the significant capacity increases and record production figures achieved in solar and wind energy over the past decade.

Stating that Turkey has undergone a major transformation in the energy sector over the last decade, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar shared the growth rates of solar and wind energy in electricity generation and installed capacity with the public.

Massive Increase in Solar Energy

The share of solar energy in electricity generation, which was 0.4 percent in 2016, rose 28-fold to 11.6 percent as of July of this year. Meanwhile, the share of solar energy in total installed electricity capacity increased approximately 19-fold to reach 21.7 percent.

Developments in Wind Energy

The share of wind energy in electricity generation, which stood at 5.7 percent a decade ago, climbed to 12.1 percent as of July of this year. Over the same period, the share of wind in installed capacity increased by approximately 66 percent, reaching the 12.1 percent level.

Evaluations by Minister Bayraktar

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated that the total installed capacity in solar and wind has reached approximately 43,000 megawatts. He noted that this transformation is an indicator of concrete steps taken toward the goal of full independence in energy and a cleaner energy future.

Minister Bayraktar recorded that they will take this success achieved in renewable energy to a further level with new targets to be presented at COP31, which will be held in Antalya.

July Production Records

Turkey's total installed electricity capacity rose to 126,476 megawatts in July 2026. As of the end of July, the combined installed capacity of solar and wind reached 42,865 megawatts.

Following the record broken in June, electricity generation from solar energy refreshed its record in July, reaching the highest monthly figure of all time at 5.37 billion kilowatt-hours.
