Turkey's major transformation in renewable energy investments over the last 10 years
With investments made in solar and wind energy over the last 10 years, Turkey's share of renewables in electricity generation has reached record levels.
According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, as a result of investments implemented over the last 10 years, the share of solar and wind energy in Turkey's electricity generation has increased significantly.
National Energy Policy Momentum
With the National Energy and Mining Policy implemented in 2016, Turkey's potential in solar and wind energy, alongside oil and natural gas, was elevated to a new level.
Share of Solar and Wind Increased
Solar energy, which had a 0.4 percent share in electricity generation in 2016, increased 28-fold to reach 11.6 percent as of July 2026.
During the same period, the share of wind energy in electricity generation rose from 5.7 percent to 12.1 percent with a 1.1-fold increase.
Installed Capacity Data
While Turkey's total installed electricity capacity rose to 126,476 megawatts as of the end of July, solar energy accounted for 27,507 megawatts of this total.
Wind energy installed capacity reached 15,358 megawatts, achieving a 12.1 percent share of the total installed capacity.
New Records in Generation
Following the record broken in June, electricity generation from solar energy renewed its record in July, reaching 5.37 billion kilowatt-hours and registering the highest figure of all time on a monthly basis.
Future Goals and COP31
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated that they will carry this success achieved in renewable energy to an even more advanced level with new targets to be set forth at COP31 to be held in Antalya.
