During a rally in Nebraska, US President Donald Trump stated that he took an unprecedented step to lower costs, signing a decree that temporarily allows the use of red-dyed diesel fuel—used for agricultural vehicles and construction equipment—on highways and defers the payment of the federal excise tax until the end of the year.

Details of the Decree

A presidential decree was signed allowing everyone to purchase the fuel tax-free for any purpose, which is completely identical to normal diesel but sold tax-free for off-highway vehicles.

Instructions to the Treasury and Ministries

According to an information memo shared by the White House, the US Department of Treasury was instructed to defer the payment of the federal excise tax applied to the use of red diesel on highways until the end of the year without interest or penalties.

The decree also envisioned exploring options to eliminate the obligation to pay the deferred taxes.

Interagency Coordination

While the US Department of Transportation was tasked with coordinating with states, industry representatives, and labor organizations, the Department of Agriculture was asked to ensure farmers' access to red-dyed diesel.

Expected Cost Savings

This step aims to reduce fuel costs for American farmers, truck drivers, and workers, with truck drivers expected to save over 100 dollars on every fill-up.

It was noted that the federal diesel tax is 24.4 cents per gallon, amounting to approximately 60 dollars for a 250-gallon fill-up, and with states taking parallel steps, savings are expected to exceed 100 dollars.
