The US Treasury Department targeted and added Russia's leading financial institution, VTB Bank, to its sanctions list over allegations that it helped Iran evade economic sanctions.

Rationale for the Sanctions

In a statement issued by the US Treasury Department, it was stated that VTB Bank established correspondent banking relationships with sanctioned Iranian banks.

It was noted that the institution engaged in activities aimed at helping Iran bypass sanctions and has become one of the financial institutions subject to the world's most comprehensive sanctions.

Warning to Foreign Institutions

It was stated that foreign financial institutions continuing to transact with VTB Bank face a higher risk of sanctions.

In warnings issued by the Ministry, it was emphasized that these financial relations must be terminated immediately.

Commercial Activities with Iran

It was reported that VTB Bank opened offices in the country in recent years to strengthen banking coordination with the Iranian regime and expand trade.

It was alleged that the bank established relationships with sanctioned Iranian financial institutions over the past three years and increased its presence in Tehran.

Billions of Dollars in Transfers

The statement alleged that VTB Bank took steps toward transferring a multi-billion-dollar portion of frozen Iranian assets.

It was further claimed that the bank established a payment system facilitating transactions through correspondent accounts denominated in national currencies in order to boost bilateral trade.

Statements by Secretary Bessent

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that they will continue to target material and financial support that enables the country to sustain its terrorist activities.

Bessent emphasized that they will not tolerate any support given to the Iranian regime and will continue to isolate those providing such support.
