Historic Transformation at the Crisis-Hit Plant
German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen is experiencing one of the deepest crises in its history due to layoff and plant closure plans that came to the agenda following intense competition from Asia. As a result of months of negotiations with stakeholders, the company has signed a letter of intent with parties regarding the transfer of the Osnabrück plant.
Ownership Structure and New Process
Under the agreement reached, Aurelius Capital will become the majority shareholder of the facility, while the State of Lower Saxony will also hold a stake in the plant. Official approvals from relevant boards and competition authorities are awaited to finalize this significant process, the financial details of which have not yet been shared with the public.
Defense Industry Projects and Rafael Collaboration
The first anchor project within the framework of the agreement will be implemented with the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. In this context, the facility will operate in the future to produce critical components for air defense systems.
Protection of Employment and End of Automotive Production
Within the framework of the signed letter of intent, existing employment at the plant will be guaranteed and protected until 2029. Meanwhile, traditional automotive production, which has continued at the plant for 125 years, will officially come to an end in the summer of 2027.
