Speaking at a financial literacy seminar, Prof. Dr. Gaye Gencer from Yeditepe University stated that investors should not focus solely on high returns when selecting funds, should not blindly believe information on social media, and must take macroeconomic conditions into account.

Return and risk balance

Stating that investors focus mostly on returns when choosing funds, Gencer expressed that return and risk must be evaluated together.

Past performance analysis

Emphasizing that high return expectations alone are not sufficient for an investment decision, Prof. Dr. Gencer said that the reactions of securities under adverse market conditions should be taken into consideration.

Monitoring macroeconomic factors

It was stated that macroeconomic conditions such as interest rates, central bank decisions, commodity prices, and geopolitical developments should also be tracked in fund selection.

Social media and verified information

Touching upon the impact of social media on investment decisions, Gencer recommended following official and reliable channels and verifying the acquired information.

Financial literacy education

Stating that the level of financial literacy in Turkey is low and even lower among women, Gencer called on young people to improve their financial literacy.
