Extradition Process Began for ISIS Members Who Are Turkish Citizens Located in Iraq
The first group consisting of 184 Turkish citizen ISIS members, who were transferred from Syria to Iraq, has arrived in Ankara.
The extradition process to Turkey for Turkish citizen ISIS members, who were held in prisons in Syria and transferred to Iraq, has officially been implemented, and the first group has been brought to Ankara.
Start of the Extradition Process
The extradition process has begun for Turkish citizen ISIS members who were held in prisons in northeastern Syria and transferred to Iraq at the beginning of 2026. The first group, consisting of individuals held in Baghdad's Karkh Central Prison, was brought to Ankara. It was reported that the total list of Turkish citizens transferred to Iraq within this scope consists of 184 people.
Status of Fugitive Defendants
It was determined that the prepared list of 184 people includes fugitive defendants of the October 10, 2015 Ankara Train Station bombing trial. While it is known that Savaş Yıldız is on the list, it has not yet been clarified whether he was among the first group. It was revealed that another fugitive defendant of the same trial, Ömer Deniz Dündar, was brought to Turkey in May and gave a testimony.
Other Names on the List
It was also recorded that various defendants are located at different positions on the 184-person list. Mahmut Gazi Tatar is at the 132nd place on the list, İlyas Aydın is at the 32nd place, and Burak Hazar is at the 47th place.
Diplomatic and Military Background
At the beginning of the year, more than 5,700 ISIS detainees had been transferred to Iraq from prisons in northeastern Syria through a CENTCOM operation. The Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council announced on September 1 that the interrogation phase had been completed. Following talks between Ankara, Baghdad, Damascus, and Washington, the transfer of the first group to Turkey was carried out.
