Financial incentives launched for declining population border regions and islands in Greece
Greece has implemented new financial support packages targeting those relocating to the Evros region, households on the island of Kastellorizo, and children born on Nisyros in order to combat population decline.
The Greek government is implementing new support packages to encourage life in border regions and islands experiencing rapid population decline. Under the application, financial assistance of up to 10,000 Euros is provided to families relocating to the Evros region, while various payments are made to households in certain islands, newborn births, and public servants.
Resettlement support in the Evros region
The first application area of the Greek government's resettlement program is the Evros region along the Turkish and Bulgarian borders. Financial assistance of up to 10,000 Euros is offered to households relocating to designated settlements.
Household and child allowances on the island of Kastellorizo
Within the framework of the program announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, an annual payment of 5,000 Euros will be made to every household permanently living or settling on the island of Kastellorizo. Families will also receive an additional 1,000 Euros support for each child.
Incentive to increase births on Nisyros
With the program launched by the Municipality of Nisyros on the island of Nisyros, which is struggling with population loss, a one-time payment of 3,000 Euros will be made to the family for each child born on the island.
Additional facilities for healthcare personnel
To bridge the shortage of healthcare personnel on the islands, doctors serving in Sifnos are provided with free housing as well as additional monthly payments and ferry ticket support.
Support provided to education workers
Measures regarding the fight against population loss also include education workers. Teachers on the islands are given rent, food, and transportation support.
