Konya Plain Meets 10.9 Percent of Turkey's Potato Demand
Producers in Konya hold a significant share in Turkey's potato production through native seed and yield-increasing efforts, aiming to reduce external dependency.
Meeting approximately 10.9 percent of Turkey's potato production, producers in Konya are carrying out native seed and high-value-added agricultural efforts to increase yields and reduce foreign dependency.
Production Share of the Konya Plain
According to 2024 data included in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry's 2025 potato product report, 753,717 tons of potatoes were produced in Konya.
Meeting 10.9 percent of Turkey's general production of 6.9 million tons, Konya ranked third among Turkey's leading provinces in this field.
A New Era in Product Diversity
Agricultural production in the Konya Plain, which began with barley and wheat, has moved to a different dimension with the search for high-value-added crops.
After trials with corn and sunflower about 15 years ago, producers turned to potatoes and, with successful results, focused their investments on potato and potato seed production.
Seed and Raw Material Production
While the region has a production capacity of around 25,000 tons annually on a raw material basis, seed production of around 6,000 to 7,000 tons can also be achieved.
The produced seeds and raw materials are generally delivered to global companies and farmers in the region through a contract farming model.
Precise and Careful Agricultural Practices
Potato farming differs from other field crops in terms of maintenance characteristics and disease sensitivity, and requires great care.
While importance is given to hygiene in production, organic and organomineral fertilizers are preferred within the scope of disinfectant use and good agricultural practices.
Certification and Future Goals
First-stage seeds coming from abroad are transformed into certified seeds under the control of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and prepared for subsequent years.
While new potato varieties continue to be created in Turkey, efforts to reduce external dependency are ongoing.
