Cigna Aims to Lower Healthcare Costs and Improve Service Quality with AI
Cigna aims to achieve billions of dollars in savings and clinical efficiency across a broad spectrum, from the early detection of chronic diseases to accelerating prescription processes, using AI and predictive tools.
Healthcare company Cigna Group aims to both improve patient health outcomes and reduce costs through its investments in AI and data analytics technologies. The company's Chief Data, Digital and AI Officer, Katya Andresen, emphasizes that AI is not just a tool, but a strategic driver of transformation that generates measurable health outcomes.
Chronic Disease Detection and Millions of Dollars in Savings
Cigna projects that AI tools helping to identify chronic conditions such as cancer, kidney disease, and high-risk pregnancy early will generate approximately $200 million in savings over the next three years. The company adopts a preventive approach by connecting patients with clinical specialists at an early stage.
The company also aims to reduce the time clinical staff spend on documentation processes and accelerate prescription approval processes through a $100 million investment by 2028. AI-powered summarization tools used under its telehealth service MDLIVE have lightened the note-taking burden of healthcare personnel by up to 90%.
Biosimilar Drug Guidance and Patient Savings
Katya Andresen stated that Cigna leverages AI to analyze thousands of calls conducted with customer representatives. Thanks to tailored digital notifications encouraging the choice of biosimilar alternatives over expensive biologic drugs, more than 80% of users opted for the economical options.
Stating that this guidance provided patients with hundreds of millions of dollars in direct savings, Andresen reported that the practice also contributed to the company's operational efficiency.
Security, Governance, and Technology Partnerships
Highlighting the sensitivity of healthcare data, Andresen stated that operating in a heavily regulated industry, they maintain strict control mechanisms. In addition to utilizing its own proprietary data, the company collaborates with technology firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Sierra.
