Statements on the Aegean and Imia by Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetritis
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis argued that dialogue channels in relations with Türkiye should be kept open, while stating that they would not tolerate crises similar to the Imia crisis.
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis made assessments regarding the diplomatic process conducted with Türkiye and military mobility in the region during a television program he attended. Emphasizing that Athens will not compromise on its sovereign rights, Gerapetritis stated that the necessary response will be given in the event of a new hot contact situation similar to Imia.
Military Deployments and Defense Capacity
Gerapetritis stated that the relocation of the Patriot air defense system in Karpathos to Souda Bay in Crete was entirely an operational decision. Defending that this step has nothing to do with Türkiye's request, the Minister emphasized that the deployment of military units is Greece's sovereign right.
Reminding that Greece is included in the F-35 program, Gerapetritis announced that the new generation fighter jets will be included in the defense capacity starting next year. It was stated that Athens will continue to take necessary military measures to protect its national interests.
Imia and Regional Tensions
Answering a question about a possible hot contact that could be experienced with Türkiye, Gerapetritis stated that they will not allow new cases similar to Imia. Noting that Greece is militarily stronger compared to the past, the Minister said that frigates and F-16 aircraft can be dispatched to the region when necessary.
Stating that they closely follow developments in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, Gerapetritis expressed that they will respond to challenges from a position of strength. The message that Greece will not take a step back regarding its sovereign rights was reiterated.
Diplomacy and Calm Waters Policy
Stating that he is against cutting off diplomatic contacts despite his harsh rhetoric, Gerapetritis drew attention to the importance of keeping communication channels open. Defending that cutting off communication would be a major mistake, the Minister emphasized that dialogue must be sustained in order to manage tension.
Stating that the 'calm waters' policy between Ankara and Athens does not mean abandoning fundamental disagreements, Gerapetritis expressed that this approach is a tool used to establish a functional relationship.
