Turkey Increases Market Share While Tour Sales Decline in Russia
While organized summer tour sales declined across Russia, Turkey increased its market share and maintained its leadership.
Organized tour sales for the June-August period in Russia decreased by 12 percent compared to last year due to rising geopolitical tensions and spending cutbacks. Despite the overall decline, Turkey managed to protect its top spot by increasing its market share to 35.5 percent.
General Decline in Organized Tour Sales
Organized tour sales in Russia for the period between June and August dropped by 12 percent compared to last year due to increasing geopolitical tensions and reduced spending. Tour operators state that tourists avoided making long-term holiday plans during this period.
Turkey Raised Its Market Share
Despite the downward trend in the general market, Turkey preserved its top position by raising its share in the Russian market from 29 percent to 35.5 percent. While Egypt increased its market share to 11 percent and Thailand dropped out of the top five countries, demand for Vietnam and China grew in the Asian market.
Price Increases Remained Limited
Thanks to low demand and a strong ruble, no major surge occurred in holiday prices. The average package price for tours to Turkey was 253,000 rubles, with the price increase remaining at a level of 2.2 percent. It is noted that consumers react even to small price hikes by cutting back on bookings.
Changing Routes in Russian Domestic Tourism
Due to floods and environmental issues within Russia, demand for Sochi dropped by 25 percent and for Dagestan by 30 to 35 percent. Moving away from these regions, vacationers boosted demand in Anapa by 35 percent and in Crimea by more than 15 percent.
