University of Kentucky Launches Artificial Intelligence-Focused Program

The Gaines Center for the Humanities at the University of Kentucky is launching its "Year of the Human Algorithm" initiative to explore what it means to be human at a time when artificial intelligence is impacting everyday life.

Program's Opening Event

The University of Kentucky Gaines Center for the Humanities will launch the "Year of the Human Algorithm" initiative with a special event on September 1. As part of the event, AI-themed productions will be presented to attendees.

Film Screening and Panel

The initiative's first event will feature a free screening of the film "Her," directed by Spike Jonze and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. Following the screening, a faculty panel featuring experts in the field will be held.

Participating Academics

Scholars from various departments, including Molly Blasing, Jordan Brower, Sophia Farmer, Aria Halliday, and Meg Wallace, will speak on the post-film panel to discuss artificial intelligence and human relations.

Future Events Schedule

As part of the program continuing throughout the 2026-27 academic year, a screening and panel for the film "Arrival" will take place on October 5. Additionally, the Bale Boone Symposium will be held on October 6 with the participation of author Ted Chiang.
