Message on a Terror-Free Turkey from Numan Kurtulmuş
Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Kurtulmuş emphasized that toward the goal of a terror-free Turkey, laying down physical arms is not enough, and weapons in the mind must also be abandoned.
Speaker of the TBMM Numan Kurtulmuş made evaluations regarding the goal of a terror-free Turkey and a terror-free region, stating that for a permanent result, it is not enough to simply lay down physical arms, but abandoning weapons in the mind is also essential.
Goal of a Terror-Free Region
TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş stated that the goal of a terror-free region is based on strengthening sovereign states on the basis of justice, mutual respect, and cooperation. He noted that this goal is an effort to reunite and integrate the structures in the region that were torn apart a century ago.
Regional Sovereignty and Initial Steps
Stating that the first step to be taken in the region is to put an end to treating non-state armed structures as legitimate political actors, Kurtulmuş said that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Lebanon must be considered a common principle.
Responsibilities of the Parliament
Touching upon the duties of the Parliament in the process of a terror-free Turkey, Kurtulmuş stated that the implementation of the law must be monitored through a Monitoring Committee. He also emphasized that the findings of security institutions and the decisions of the executive branch will be monitored within the bounds of the law.
Abandoning Weapons in the Mind
Stating that the law opens the door, Kurtulmuş expressed that fair implementation, judicial guarantees, and political courtesy will ensure a lasting outcome. Saying that a common life must be established that protects the pride of the Turk and the honor of the Kurds under the same law, he called for abandoning weapons in the minds as well.
Emphasis on Procedure for Syria and Iraq
Expressing that the historical and social conditions of Syria and Iraq differ from those of Turkey, Kurtulmuş stated that the efforts in Turkey cannot be copied one-to-one for these countries, but the element that can be transferred there is the procedure.
Democratic Politics and Liquidation
Stating that terrorist organizations have caused the loss of lives and resources for nearly half a century, Kurtulmuş noted that these structures will be liquidated within the framework of law and democratic politics, and that the true legacy is the convergence of state wisdom and the conscience of the nation.
