21 People Placed Under Medical Supervision Due to Anthrax Case in Lovech Village of Stefanovo

Acting upon an anthrax case that emerged at a livestock farm in the village of Stefanovo, Lovech, authorities have placed 21 people identified as having direct contact with the infected animal under health surveillance.

Epidemic Commission and Those Under Surveillance

Lovech Regional Governor Plamen Hristov announced during a meeting of the Regional Epizootic Commission that 21 people connected to the anthrax case have been placed under surveillance. This group includes four individuals who sought medical attention after showing symptoms of the illness, as well as family members, the acting village mayor, food safety workers, and police officers.

Measures Taken and Animal Movements

Dr. Tihomira Vitsova from the Lovech Regional Food Safety Directorate stated that the health status of animals in the region is being monitored regularly every day and that all movement of animals in the Stefanovo area has been prohibited.

Mode of Contact and Vaccination Efforts

It was noted that there are one cattle farm and three sheep farms in the area, and that individuals who came into contact with the infected animal had direct contact with the carcass and skin of the animal during slaughter. Phased anthrax vaccination efforts are ongoing in the village.

Administrative Penalties and Public Health Status

An administrative penalty will be imposed on the farm owner, who was found to have failed to report changes in the herd and health issues to the authorities. Governor Plamen Hristov stated that the situation is complex, but there is no current risk to public health.
