Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burak Orhan Boran from Medicana Bahçelievler Hospital stated that babies' skulls are flexible in the first months, and constantly laying them in the same position can negatively affect their head shape.

Flexible Structure of the Skull and Risk of Flattening

In the first months of their lives, babies' skulls have a quite flexible structure. During this period, lying in the same position and on the back for a long time can lead to flattening in the head shape.

Constantly having the same region in contact with the bed paves the way for deformities to emerge due to external pressure.

Genetic Factors and Craniosynostosis Condition

The head structure of babies is largely influenced by genetic characteristics. However, not every deformity can be explained by genetics, and caution must be exercised regarding craniosynostosis at this point.

The premature closure of the joints called sutures in the skull leads to the condition of craniosynostosis. This condition can cause neurological problems in some cases.

Importance of Early Diagnosis and Expert Support

Early diagnosis and treatment are of great importance in conditions such as craniosynostosis. A significant portion of the cases consist of positional head deformities based on simple reasons.

It is recommended that parents consult an experienced specialist without wasting time when they encounter such situations and receive the necessary guidance.

Warnings and Recommendations for Parents

While complying with safe sleep rules, it is recommended to regularly change the direction the baby's head is facing. In addition, babies should be ensured to spend time in different positions.
