Common mistakes in first aid practices pose life-threatening risks
Experts emphasized that incorrect interventions applied in situations such as burns, nosebleeds, and bee stings increase the risk of infection and deepen tissue damage.
Specialist Dr. Mert Vural drew attention to commonly mistaken first aid practices, stating that unconscious interventions during burns, nosebleeds, epileptic seizures, bee stings, and choking can pose fatal dangers.
Applying yogurt and tomato paste to burns
It was explained that applying yogurt and tomato paste to the wound, which is a widespread practice among the public in case of burns, is wrong.
It was stated that applying yogurt or tomato paste increases the risk of infection and deepens tissue damage, and that the burned area should only be washed with clean water.
Mistakes made during nosebleeds
It was noted that tilting the head backward during a nosebleed is an incorrect practice, leading to blood flowing into the stomach and causing nausea.
It was recorded that the correct intervention is to lean the head slightly forward, pinch the nostrils for five minutes, and apply cold to the back of the neck.
Method of intervention during an epileptic seizure
It was emphasized that making a person having an epileptic seizure smell onions or cologne and trying to force their mouth open is not correct.
Information was given that laying the patient on a flat surface and placing a soft pillow under their head is the most accurate approach.
Bee stings and choking on objects
It was stated that trying to remove the stinger with tweezers in bee stings makes it easier for the venom sac to penetrate the skin.
It was reported that in cases of choking, the back area should not be hit unconsciously, and the Heimlich maneuver should be applied according to the person's condition.
