It has been reported that over-the-counter melatonin supplements turned to by individuals struggling with sleep problems are not completely harmless sleep aids and that unconscious use harbors various risks.

Prevalence of Sleep Problems

According to data from the Ministry of Health, 23.7% of individuals aged 18 and over who participated in the survey reported experiencing sleep problems. Among those reporting sleep problems, conditions such as sleeping little, having trouble falling asleep, and not being able to sleep at all stood out.

Nature and Effect of Melatonin

Dr. Merve Gümüşay reminded that melatonin is a biologically active hormone, unlike classic sleep medications. It was stated that its being marketed as natural or herbal does not mean it can be used haphazardly.

Biological Clock and Timing

Melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland that signals the body that night has begun and regulates the circadian rhythm. Experts stated that not only the amount taken, but also the time at which it is taken is of great importance.

Areas of Use and Side Effects

It was noted that melatonin can be useful in jet lag and some circadian rhythm disorders, but can lead to side effects such as morning grogginess, headache, and nausea. It was emphasized that pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and individuals with chronic diseases should consult a physician.
