Improving Quality of Life and Health Recommendations After Kidney Transplantation
The life expectancy of kidney transplant patients is much longer compared to dialysis patients; however, medication use and hygiene rules must be observed to protect the organ.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümit Özçelik, a General Surgery Specialist from Yeditepe University Hospitals Organ Transplant Center, stated that the life expectancy of kidney transplant patients is approximately three times longer than that of dialysis patients, and issued important warnings regarding medication use, infection risks, nutrition, and return to daily life after the transplant.
Life Expectancy and Risk Management
It is stated that the transplanted kidney carries a lifelong risk of rejection, but this risk can be significantly reduced through regular check-ups and adherence to treatment.
Experts emphasize that the life expectancy of kidney transplant patients is approximately three times longer than that of dialysis patients.
Medication Use and Physician Controls
It is of great importance that patients fully adhere to the dosages and usage times of immunosuppressive drugs.
Medications such as painkillers and antibiotics must strictly be used only upon a physician's recommendation.
Precautions Against Infection Risks
It is stated that especially the first six months after the transplant is a critical period against the risk of infection.
During this process, it is recommended to use masks, stay away from crowded environments, and pay attention to hand hygiene.
Social Life and Environmental Restrictions
Avoiding contact with soil and animals is among the issues that must be paid attention to in order to protect health after the transplant.
Warnings have been issued not to use public toilets, Turkish baths, pools, and saunas for the first year.
Nutrition and Fluid Consumption
Adopting a low-fat, low-salt, and balanced diet is extremely important for kidney health.
Grapefruit and pomegranates should not be consumed as they may interact with certain medications, and at least 2.5 liters of fluid should be taken daily.
Physical Activity and Daily Life
It is mandatory not to lift heavy loads for the first three months and to avoid heavy sports for the first year.
During the post-operative period, patients are expected not to drive and to pay attention to rest for the first month.
Private Life and Pregnancy Planning
Following a successful recovery process, it is possible for patients to return to their sexual lives after about six weeks.
Experts have noted that female patients planning a pregnancy should wait at least one year.
