Neurology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Aygün Üstel stated that long-term sleep problems may be associated with the risk of Alzheimer's disease, emphasizing that sleep disorders should not be regarded as a natural consequence of aging.

The Role of Sleep in Brain Health

Neurology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Demet Aygün Üstel noted that sleep is not merely a resting process, and that during sleep, the brain continues its activities related to memory, learning, and the removal of metabolic waste.

The Relationship Between Sleep Disorders and Alzheimer's

Pointing out that the relationship between sleep and Alzheimer's disease can be bidirectional, Üstel stated that sleep disorders can be a risk factor for cognitive decline. She noted that changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer's disease can also cause disruptions in the sleep-wake cycle.

Factors Affecting Sleep Quality

Emphasizing that frequent awakenings throughout the night and a decrease in deep sleep periods negatively affect sleep quality, Üstel conveyed that even if a person stays in bed for eight hours, they may not achieve sufficient and quality sleep if their sleep is constantly interrupted.

Sleep Apnea and Its Symptoms

It was reported that in the presence of symptoms such as loud snoring, noticing pauses in breathing during sleep, waking up unrefreshed in the morning, and excessive daytime sleepiness, an evaluation for sleep apnea should be conducted.

Clearing of Metabolic Wastes

Stating that the brain's mechanisms for clearing certain metabolic wastes accumulated during the day operate more actively during sleep, experts noted that the relationship between beta-amyloid and tau proteins and sleep is being investigated for this reason.

Other Factors Causing Forgetfulness

It was stated that insufficient sleep, stress, depression, certain medications, and various health issues can also cause forgetfulness, and that these conditions must be addressed with care in terms of brain health.
