The European Commission has proposed a new Council recommendation promoting regular check-ups to combat cardiovascular diseases, and launched the first EU Screening Week within this scope.

The Cost of Cardiovascular Diseases

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the European Union, causing approximately 1.7 million deaths per year. These diseases impose an economic cost of over 282 billion euros annually.

Early Intervention and Prevention Potential

The Commission states that up to 80 percent of cases can be prevented by combating risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol. Health Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi stated that the vast majority of diseases can be prevented through the early detection of risks.

Secure Hearts Plan Objectives

The proposal forms part of the Secure Hearts Plan, introduced in December 2025, which aims to reduce premature cardiovascular deaths by 25 percent by 2035. The plan aims to provide broader access to screening.

Free Check-up Points Established

Within the framework of EU Screening Week, healthcare organizations have established freely accessible check-up points across Europe. The initiative aims to contribute to reducing inequalities in access to healthcare.
