Prejudices and fear of discrimination hinder mental health treatment
The fear of stigma and discrimination faced by individuals experiencing mental health issues makes accessing professional treatment difficult.
Prof. Dr. Hasan Belli from Atlas University Faculty of Medicine stated that the stigmatization and discrimination to which individuals suffering from mental health issues are exposed negatively affect their treatment processes.
Stigmatization and social exclusion
It was reported that individuals with psychiatric illnesses face experiences of stigmatization and discrimination in their business and social relationships. It was conveyed that individuals who have difficulty finding jobs may also be exposed to discriminatory attitudes after starting work.
Weakeness in the pursuit of treatment
It was expressed that the anxiety of being judged or excluded by society weakens the search for professional support. It was emphasized that the treatment processes of individuals who avoid applying for healthcare services out of fear of facing discrimination become more difficult.
Mental health literacy
It was stated that improving mental health literacy can play an important role in combating stigma. It was noted that informational and awareness-raising efforts to be made will contribute to eliminating misconceptions in society.
Social responsibility and inclusivity
It was expressed that in-service training for healthcare professionals should be expanded, support programs should be established in workplaces, and a language free from discriminatory expressions should be used in the media.
