Proposal for ID Requirement in Cigarette Sales and Privacy Debates
The Minister of Health's proposal to require ID presentation for age verification in cigarette sales has raised privacy concerns. Following objections, alternative electronic systems have been taken into consideration.
Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu's statement, which envisions ID presentation and age verification during cigarette purchases to prevent sales to minors under 18, has brought along privacy debates.
ID Requirement and Age Verification
Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu stated that within the scope of the legislative proposal, presenting an ID will be made mandatory in cigarette sales, and the sales ban targeting individuals under 18 will be tightened through an age verification application.
Privacy Concerns and Objection
The objection to the preparation of the regulation came from Chief Advisor to the President Oktay Saral. Saral argued that demanding an ID in tobacco sales is unacceptable, that sharing identity information creates privacy concerns, and that the practice would draw backlash.
Alternative Systems and Gratitude
Asking citizens to be at ease, Minister Memişoğlu announced that they are evaluating all options, including electronic systems that respect privacy, protect personal data, and provide ease of application. Following this statement by Memişoğlu, Saral thanked him for the sensitivity shown.
Indoor Area Regulations
Along with the age limit and ID debates, Health Minister Memişoğlu also publicly announced that new regulations will be made regarding the smoking ban in indoor areas of cafes and restaurants.
