Reaction from the Unity and Solidarity Union to the Rent and Eviction Problem in FHCs

Ahmet Mehlepçi, Chairman of the Unity and Solidarity Union, reacted to the high rent and eviction problem experienced at the Kartal No. 6 Family Health Center. Emphasizing that Family Health Centers are not commercial enterprises, Mehlepçi called on the Ministry of Health for a permanent and public solution.

Rent Crisis Experienced in Kartal

Following the change of property ownership at the Kartal No. 6 Family Health Center, the rent increase and eviction demand created a major problem. While it was stated that the existing structure does not even have windows and a monthly rent of 38 thousand liras was being paid, it was expressed that the new property owner demanded approximately 150 thousand liras in rent.

More Than 10 Thousand Citizens Affected

The ongoing rent and eviction problem directly affects not only the healthcare workers serving at the center but also over 10 thousand registered citizens. It was reported that access to primary healthcare services will be adversely affected by this situation.

Physical Problems Across Turkey

It was noted that there are approximately 8,300 Family Health Centers across Turkey, and problems regarding buildings, earthquake safety, and inadequate physical conditions persist in most of these centers. Rooms without adequate ventilation and inappropriate working areas draw attention.

Rising Costs and Virtual FHCs

It was stated that family physicians in metropolitan cities are forced to provide services in rented spaces due to the inadequacy of public buildings, and the financial burden has reached unsustainable dimensions along with additional expenses such as electricity and cleaning.

Healthcare Service is Not a Commercial Enterprise

Ahmet Mehlepçi, Chairman of the Unity and Solidarity Union, emphasized that Family Health Centers cannot be treated like commercial businesses. It was stated that providing suitable spaces where healthcare services will be delivered is the responsibility of the public sector.

Call for a Permanent and Public Solution

Making a call to the Ministry of Health and the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate, Mehlepçi requested that primary healthcare services not be left to the initiative of the rental market and property owners, and that permanent measures be taken.
