Age limit and new regulatory rules introduced for social media use in Turkey
A new regulation published in the Official Gazette bans social media use for children under 15. Taking effect on November 1, 2026, the regulation includes e-Government-based age verification and strict security measures for ages 15-18.
Prepared by the Cyber Security Directorate and entering into force on November 1, 2026, the new regulation introduces sweeping changes to social media platforms in Turkey. Within the scope of the regulation, opening accounts is banned for children under 15, while mandatory e-Government age verification and various restrictions are introduced for users aged 15-18.
Era of age verification with e-Government
Social media platforms will transition to a special code system generated via e-Government to verify users' ages. Through this method, platforms will be able to confirm whether the user has passed the age limit without seeing their identity information.
Restrictions for ages 15-18
Accounts of users between the ages of 15-18 will be kept private by default and their follower lists will be closed to outsiders. Additionally, features such as live broadcasting, infinite scrolling, and personalized advertisement displays will be banned for this age group.
Messaging features will also be restricted, allowing children to receive messages only from people they follow. Platforms will be obliged to take technical measures to prevent children from taking screenshots.
Parental control and family tools
The new regulation offers parents tools to manage their children's social media usage. Families will be able to limit their children's screen time, set spending limits, and control settings such as location sharing.
Transition process for existing accounts
The regulation covers not only new accounts but also existing users. Social media companies will be required to complete age verification for currently active accounts by March 31, 2027. Accounts determined to belong to children under 15 will be closed.
