Egypt adopts new protection measures for children's social media use
Egypt has launched an account ban for under-13s and mandatory Safe Mode for youth groups to protect children from digital risks.
Under the directives of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the Egyptian government has implemented comprehensive new regulations to protect children and youth from the risks of social media platforms.
Details of the New Social Media Regulation
In line with the decisions made by the Egyptian Cabinet, social media platforms have been banned from creating independent personal accounts for children under the age of 13.
Restrictions Imposed by Age Groups
Users between the ages of 13 and 15 will be able to open social media accounts, but Safe Mode will be automatically and mandatorily activated on these accounts.
Timeframe and Measures Granted to Platforms
The relevant authorities granted platforms a period of 3 months to implement the conditions, and requested that they submit an implementation plan containing technical and operational measures within 30 days.
Global Steps to Protect Children
Around 20 countries worldwide have either implemented similar regulations or announced they will do so, and the European Commission has also announced similar plans.
