Journalist Fatih Ergin, who was detained at his home last night on the grounds of a social media post, was arrested by the court to which he was referred.
Detained upon the instructions of the Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Ergin was brought before the duty criminal judgeship after his procedures at the courthouse.
His Lawyer Announced the Developments
Attorney Sibel Sevinç Deveci Özçelik, who announced the detention decision to the public, also shared the arrest decision on her social media account.
In her post, Özçelik announced the arrest decision to her followers and stated that the legal process is being followed.
Grounds for the Investigation
It was learned that Ergin was detained due to a post he made regarding the finding of former campus doctor Turgay Tamer, who was previously detained in the investigation concerning former MIT officer Kaşif Kozinoğlu, dead in his home.
His use of the phrase "Forensic Medicine employee" for Tamer in the post formed the main basis of the investigation.
Charges Filed
Legal action was initiated against Fatih Ergin within the scope of the relevant articles of the Turkish Penal Code due to the post in question.
Ergin was charged with publicly disseminating misleading information under Article 217/A of the TPC and committing the offense through press and publication under Article 218 of the TPC.
