Preparation for Phone Ban in Schools and Age Limit for Social Media in the Netherlands
Within the framework of a new plan prepared in the Netherlands, the mobile phone ban in schools is being expanded while an age limit of 15 is planned for social media use.
With the Online Children's Rights Plan prepared by the Dutch government, phone bans in schools are being tightened and an age limit of 15 is targeted for social media use.
Expanded Phone Ban in Schools
Starting January 1, 2027, the use of mobile phones will be completely banned in primary and secondary education institutions. Previously applied on a limited basis, this ban will be expanded to include breaks, common areas, and school yards.
Social Media and Content Creation Regulation
The government wants an age limit of 15 to be introduced for social media use. Online content featuring children under the age of fifteen may be considered child labor under certain conditions, and content creators who violate the rules will be fined.
Europe-Wide Algorithm and Platform Restrictions
The Netherlands proposes that autoplay and personalized algorithms designed to keep children on platforms be restricted or completely banned across Europe. The effects of platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, Roblox, Fortnite, ChatGPT, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok on children will be investigated.
