Prepared through the efforts of the Cyber Security Presidency and relevant ministries, the new social media regulation aims to enhance children's digital safety. Within the scope of the regulation entering into force on November 1, 2026, individuals under the age of 15 are prohibited from opening accounts on social media platforms, and the process of closing existing accounts is initiated.

Age Limit and Verification Process

With the new regulation, social network providers are obligated not to offer services to children under 15. Age determination procedures will be carried out via e-Government in accordance with the principle of personal data protection.

The deadline for existing account holders to complete age verification procedures has been set as March 31, 2027. Accounts that are not verified by this date will be closed by the system.

Restrictions for the 15-18 Age Group

Protective measures such as mandatory private profiles, a ban on live streaming, and the blocking of personalized advertisements are being implemented for users between the ages of 15 and 18.

The follower information of children in this age group will be hidden, and various technical restrictions will be applied to prevent screen addiction. Additionally, messaging features will be limited only to followed accounts.

Parental Control and Technical Measures

The regulation grants parents the ability to monitor their children's digital activities. Parents will have supervisory authority regarding account settings, paid transactions, screen time, and location sharing.

Platforms have been made mandatory to take technical measures to prevent taking screenshots and to provide tools to users for protecting children's accounts.
