US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement has been reached with Russia for the supply of a large amount of diesel fuel in order to lower rising energy costs. While this move was criticized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Washington administration implemented temporary flexibility on certain sanctions against Russia.

Energy Costs and Elections

Ahead of the upcoming midterm elections in the US, rising living costs and soaring gasoline and diesel prices continue to create significant dissatisfaction among voters. President Donald Trump stated that securing lower prices for American farmers, ranchers, and truckers is his top priority.

Agreement Reached with Russia

Following his talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump announced that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the American and global markets. The Kremlin administration also confirmed that they are ready to supply oil and petroleum products to America and world markets.

Phased Shipment Plan

According to the announcement, the Moscow administration will ship 500,000 tons in November, followed by one million tons of diesel, with larger volumes of fuel supply to be provided in the future. The US Treasury Department issued a temporary license allowing Russian diesel to flow into global markets until April 2027.

Reaction from Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described this decision by the US as dishonest, unbecoming of partners, and a weak decision. Meanwhile, Trump pointed to Ukraine's attacks on Russian refineries as one of the causes of the increase in fuel prices.

Global Energy Crisis

Following the US and Israeli attacks targeting Iran in late February, Tehran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which is critically important for energy transit, led to record surges in gasoline and diesel prices. Gasoline prices in the US increased by an average of more than 46 percent.

Peace Talks in Miami

On the day the news of the agreement was announced, Ukrainian and American negotiators met in Miami to break the deadlock in the conflict. US envoy Steve Witkoff stated that the parties held constructive discussions on ways to end the war before the winter months.
