Warning on Firearms and Social Media from National Education Minister Yusuf Tekin to Families
Minister Yusuf Tekin stated that the incident in Manisa should not be evaluated in the context of school safety and warned parents regarding firearm safety and social media supervision.
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin evaluated the armed attack incident in the Turgutlu district of Manisa during a live broadcast he attended and made important warnings to families. Stating that those who keep licensed firearms at home must be careful, Tekin emphasized that it is of vital importance for parents to closely monitor their children's social media use and messaging.
Evaluation of the Armed Attack in Manisa
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin stated that the armed attack that occurred near a school in the Turgutlu district of Manisa should not be characterized directly as a school attack.
Indicating that the incident should not be interpreted solely through the concepts of school security and safety, Tekin conveyed that families also have critical responsibilities in ensuring social safety.
Warning for Licensed Firearms at Home
Reminding that the attacker took the shotgun from his grandfather's house, Minister Tekin stated that it is essential for families who keep licensed firearms in their homes to store these weapons in places inaccessible to children.
Noting that the suspect was a newly registered ninth-grade student who went to school for only a few days, Tekin expressed that it is not possible to speak of peer bullying in this incident.
Call for Social Media and Digital Security
Stating that families must attach importance to the social media supervision of their children, Tekin said that personal data and private photos shared on digital platforms can pose major threats.
Drawing attention to the fact that children may encounter blackmail and threats on these mediums, the minister noted that it is inevitable for parents to track their children's messaging until adulthood.
Physical Security Measures Taken in Schools
Stating that they have created a list of standard measures for schools, Tekin reported that they have taken measures such as indoor and surrounding camera systems, KGYS integration, turnstiles, and facial recognition systems.
He also stated that hand detectors, emergency buttons, parent appointment systems, cell phone restrictions, school uniforms, and apron applications for teachers continue to be implemented in schools.
Garden Staff and Related Works
Providing information on the works carried out within the scope of the safety of school surroundings, Minister Tekin announced that there are over twenty-three thousand garden staff who have officially started working in schools.
