Italian Football Federation President Giovanni Malago Appointed Trustee of His Own Federation
The crisis in Italy arising from membership disputes was resolved through the consensus of CONI and FIGC, leading to Giovanni Malago being appointed as trustee of his own federation.
It has been reported that Italian Football Federation President Giovanni Malago was appointed as trustee of his own federation by the Italian National Olympic Committee due to membership disputes during the election process.
Membership Disputes and Crisis
Following Giovanni Malago's election to the presidency of the Italian Football Federation on June 22, the lack of a registered membership in the federation as of his candidacy date brought legal debates along with it.
This situation turned into a crisis between the two institutions over the validity of the federation's extraordinary general assembly and CONI's supervisory authority.
Interim Formula and Trustee Appointment
In order to resolve the disagreement between the parties, an agreement was reached for Malago to step down from the presidency and for a trustee to be appointed by CONI until a new extraordinary general assembly is held.
According to the statement made by CONI, Malago was appointed as a trustee to convene the elective extraordinary general assembly until January 31, 2027.
Inter-Institutional Disagreements
Sports Minister Andrea Abodi's support for CONI's stance regarding supervision was criticized by Malago, who evaluated it as political interference.
Reports in the Italian press shared signals that the disputes in the process could jeopardize the country's candidacy to host EURO 2032.
