$1.8 Billion Virtual Biology Initiative Launched by US Government and Tech Giants
A major research program aimed at modeling human cells using artificial intelligence has been launched.
The Zuckerberg-backed Biohub, Google, Meta, and the U.S. government have launched the $1.8 billion Virtual Biology Initiative, which aims to model human cells digitally using artificial intelligence.
Main objective and goals of the project
The initiative was launched to collect and standardize the massive amount of biological data required for artificial intelligence models to predict the behaviors of human cells.
What will virtual cell modeling provide?
The long-term goal of the project is to accelerate scientific research by developing artificial intelligence models capable of predicting how cells will respond to drugs and genetic modifications.
Contributions of technology companies and the government
Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs, and Meta are investing a total of $300 million into the project, while the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health are providing major financial and infrastructure support.
Sharing data with the scientific community
The biological datasets to be created are planned to be made available to the broader scientific community following a one-year exclusive access period for commercial partners.
