The accident and the journey of the toys
In 1992, a container that fell from the ship Ever Laurel due to a storm led to thousands of bath toys spreading into the ocean. Thanks to their airtight structure, these toys did not sink and embarked on a global journey that lasted for years.
Drifting from the coasts of Alaska to Japan, and from there to the Arctic ice, the toys reached the shores of Scotland and the United Kingdom in 2007. This process created a natural experimental field for observing the movements of ocean currents.
Scientific modeling and OSCURS
Oceanographers Curtis Ebbesmeyer and James Ingraham developed a computer simulation model called OSCURS by tracking the routes taken by the toys. This model succeeded in predicting currents by combining atmospheric pressure and wind data.
The success of the model was proven by its accurate prediction of the speed of circular gyres in the North Pacific and the time it took for objects to reach the shores. This study became an important turning point in understanding ocean dynamics.
Contribution to search and rescue operations
The developed simulation model was not limited to scientific research but also began to be used actively in forensic cases and search and rescue operations.
Police units in the US and the UK increased their operational success by utilizing this data to determine the routes of missing persons or abandoned ships at sea.
